if i have 3 points connected together, isn't that still a graph. i my opinion of a graph, i think it is a sketch or diagram show the connection between to or more points represented on both axis. i must say that i strongly agree with u when u say that it consists of both x and y values.

to help backup my last statement, i would like to take a curved graph for example. it consists of more than 2 points. not only can a graph be curved, but it can be straight or any other design as long as it doesn't end on the same point on which it began. for e.g. a circle ends where it begins, so i don't consider it to be a graph, however a semi-circle could be one. anyone feel free to correct me if am wrong. I'm eager to learn more!
a)what i understand about a graph is that each point on the graph represents 2 values in which 1 is on the y-axis and 1 is on the x-axis.
b)the use of a graph is to represent the values of 1 body against the values of another body! for e.g. the number of apples against the number of oranges!

u have me confused! right now i'm very puzzled. u say that a graph shows the relationship between two things in real life. e.g distance and time. is it that u are trying to say that distance and time is real life?
u then go on to say that u can label the axies differently. x and y are not compulsory, they are just commonly used. i like to say that i think the axies are compulsory in the sense that the axies name never changes, it is the representation on the axies that changes. the x-axis will always be called the x-axis and will always run horizontally likewise for the y-axis running vertically. these axies name never changes but what ever is represented on the axis is what changes. for e.g. you can have the number of oranges or the number of apples on the y-axis, the is what changes, but after all it is still the y-axis and runs vertically. that never changes.
what do i understand by a graph....a graph is used to plot points.these points can either be an x pt or a y pt.
wen you plot these two pts you can join them to create a line....(a line is 2 pts connected)

I think you can use a graph to show how a reaction occur by plotting the time the reaction take to occur by the temperature.

I believe that a graph represents the relationship between 2 things in really life scenario eg. how fast you are driving to how long will you take to reach at a particular place.

ok, for example a car is travelling and you want to find the relationship between the distance the car travels and the time it takes to travel at certain distances.
therefore you would label the two axis as Time and Distance, this states that you are showing a relationship between these two things.
Initially when time is zero, distance is zero and as you go you create a gradient or slope as to distance against time, on this slope you can create points to show at a certain time the distance travelled was...
Time/Distance = Velocity

a graph is just a representation of a horizontal line for the horizontal, a vertical line for the vertical and one that protrudes for 3-d purposes. Co-ordinates i.e. points that are represented on a graph uses these lines which have measurements to represent a certain position from another.
marz, 2 points can be used to make a line, why do you say 3? you make it sound like if only 3 points can do that, explain please

i think a graph displays the relationship between 2 commodities or 2 different set of values.
x represented on the horizontal axis versus y represented on the vertical axis.
an example is a sphere which has a magnitude in a horizontal, vertical and outward direction. On a graph the distance between the center and the outer points are uniform and can be represented by the formula 4/3 pi cubic r where r is the distance between the two points.

The distance and time a car travels from point A to point B.
The distance is on the y-axis and the time on the x-axis.
an example of this is that a value for x can be the time taken for an object to reach from point A to ptB.y can be the distance the object travelled.the slope of the graph would be the speed at which the object travelled.
A graph can be used to compare two things at once. eg. The amount of books you sell in a day. The amount can go on the y axis and the time in days can go on the x axis.

the builing goes from up and down so it is vertical and can be represented as the (y axis) and the flat piece of land goes from left to right that is horizontal and is represented as (x axis).
say the closer you walk to the building the closer you moves towards the y axis and the further away you walk away from the building the further away you are from the y axis

Ratman a graph cud hav a negative slpoe if u are movin from the top right to lower left in that direction. Pebbles the representation of the values can be be different. It doesn't matter wghether it is thwe x or y however the shape and gradient of the graph will be completely opposite. One question can u start from larger values to smaller values on the graph? this ia an eaxample of a negative slpoe.
i understand that a graph has x and y values but it is how ever dependant on how it is represented. for the x axis must b the horizontal line while y axis must always b vertical to the x axis.
im puzzled where did a sphere come from in this question. refresh my memory

In my opinion a graph is a method of displaying information in a form that people can understand. Even if you are not verse in mathematics you can still notice trends, make predictions. It helps you to comunicate information in a way in which you can actually see the numbers represented.

you asked about distance being on the horizontal axis and time on the vertical axis
usually time is set on the horizontal axis because it usually shows a contant change e.g. 1 - 10 - 20 - 30 etc.
i'm nut sure but i think its find if it's on the vertical axis but then you would have a kinda slant looking graph, because sometimes the distance may be the same and the time is still going.

Time is represented on the x axis because it increases or decreases with a constant value whereas
distance could vary. someone correct me if i'm wrong
situations usually have more than one factor involved. so too do graphs,in an average situation these factors may be related in some way. this is what a graph does it shows a relationship between two things.

A graph is the representation of 2 mediums versus each other and is laid out as a 2d image. The x-axsis represents values on a horizontal plane and the y-axsis is perpendicular to the x-axsis therefore it is vertical. And we can also say that the x and y axsies are in essence 'number lines'.

For an example. if a scientist is doing an experiment and takes results and writes the information he gained in numbers he would be able to understand it for the monent. if he wanted to analyse the information for a certain purpous it wolud be dificult for him to notise trends in the infoormation he collected if it is in table form. but if he representd it in graph form he would be able to notice trends, differences, and other things alot easyer. does anyone agree?
Yes when u are plotting values the distance is uniform in the all 3 directions for the sphere. Have u ever done add maths? In add maths graphs actually show how to derive a shape usually by a formula which is its area in 2-d cases and its volume in 3-d cases.

i would like to touch on certain comments that i see that are constantly being posted. you'll say that a graph is some thing that represents real life values.
you'll go on to say that distance and time is real life values. i would like for you'll to adjust your thinking for a little while. think about it. x and y are aspects of unknown things or could be known if you are given the values of it. these are real things. they are aspects of something. they however have NO LIFE, so when u say that x and y are real life values, you are putting life to it and IT IS NOT ALIVE. the best thing that i think you'll should say is that IT REPRESENT ASPECT OF REAL THINGS. Real does not mean only living things. a wall could be made from real blocks or real wood. this could be represented on a graph of number of block walls to wood walls. the walls doesn't have life. it is non-living things. it is apects of something and has notting to do with life.
in relation to the example given by sly. temperature would be represented on the vertical axis and time on the horizontal axis.
the state or the temperature of the water at any given time can be determined by extending a perpendiculsr line towards the graph displayed and observe the relationship it has with the temperature.

A graph is a record of the values of objects using two comparable relationships.
An example of what a graph is used for is suppose you have a group of objects and you are told to record these objects by length and weigth. Hence a graph can be used in order to record this type of information and show the relationship among them.
Graphs are very helpful when it comes to comparing a group of objects. For example, suppose you
have a collection of steel plates however you were asked by someone to make a comparision among the steel plates. If the steel plates are all cricular in shape but are of different sizes then you can compare the area of the steel plates and another property such as the weight or the density of the material.
By using a fgraph you are able to communicate information to other pepople.
If you where to communicate information in numbers to someone they may not be able to deeduce certain aspects of it as you might be able to. If it was represented in a graphical way it would be significantly easier to recognise and see. Any coments

The relationship between two things is how one factor affects the other. for example an object moveing is moveing at a certain rate and in a certain direction.
This means that the object which is moveing is displaying more than one characteristic at the same time.
rate of movement is not the same as direction but they are connected and together they express acceleration.

When two lines on a graph intersect, at the point of intersection that point is common to both lines

a graph is used in real life situations eg. a velocity time graph can be used to determine the acceleration of a moving object.

you are not being very clear when u say "a graph is a representationof a horizontal line for a horizontal and vertical line for a vertical ...."
I would say however that it is a representation of a vertical line for the horrizontal axis and a horizontal line for the vertical axis.
This is however not my deffinition of a graph.
A graph shows the relationship between two or more variables in the form of a picture. using a graph is convenient in that unknownm values can be calculated.
A graph consists of two components: vertices and edges. Vertices are simply labels such as numbers and edges are the connections between the vertices.so inorder to draw a graph u need x and y coordinates and to hav these coordinates u need a x and y axis.
u must hav encountered a normal x and y axis graph in maths b4 where X and Y are simply variables that depend on each other. Normally we treat Y as depending on X. For me graphs are used to summerise a large amt of data into a graphical representation that can easily be read of and allow easy access of info
