A graph commonly consists of two axes called the x-axis (horizontal) and y-axis (vertical). Each axis corresponds to one variable. This variable represent something that a human can relate to for example the axes can be labelled with different names, such as velocity, time, height, temperature, price or quantity.
The place where the two axes intersect is called the origin. The origin is also identified as the point (0,0). Parts of a graph

A point on a graph represents a relationship. Each point is defined by a pair of numbers containing two co-ordinates (x and y). A co-ordinate is one of a set of numbers used to identify the location of a point on a graph. The co-ordinate is measured from the origin. First the x co-ordinate is given which states movement to the left and to the right. Second the y co-ordinate is given which states movement up and down.

I have a question is the origin alwasys needed when drawing a graph? Does it alwasy have to start at zero? Is it wrong to start with a different number? what if i started both axies at 5 ar annother value?

to crimson crock:
when drawing a graph the only two things required are the gradient of the graph and a point throough which the graph passes in the case of a straight line.
for a curve the miniumn or maximum point is needed and the points at which the curve cuts the x axis are reuired.
if anyone has any corrections please add them

you dont have to alwys start at 0. the graph can start at any value but the axis awhich the both meet dont have to be a straight line.
If u start the both axis with another number it is not wrong

say for example you want both the vertical and horizontal line to start at 5 as u said.instaed of drawing to staright line for the graph like we normally do.
at the start of the y axis u draw the line but put a kink in the line then continue straight up and u do the same for the x axis

so u can start at any value for the graph. but can u use different values for each axis? like, can u start at 10 on the x-axis and 5 on the y-axis?

crimson u can start your graph at any point. lets say u wan to start at 5, jus draw a dotted line from the 5 parallel to the original x axis and use it as your horizontal

pebbles you can't actually start at x=10 and y=5, unless the equation of y=mx + c is; when x is equal to 10, y is equal to 5.

usually you are given an equation, there you can start at which x coordinate you want.

a graph usually starts at a point where x=0 or y = 0.
this is usually for conveniemce i believe.

is it not dependent on the equation to decide where the graphs begin? cuz a curve doesnt necessarily start at 0 but sometimes alomst half of the curve is on the negative line...:S

i don't understand what you are saying about the y=mx+c. Ent you can sart a graph at any point? You just need to put a jagged line right after the orgin and start with any number.

y+mx=c

this is the relationship between x and y. m is the gradient to show the slope of the line and c is the y-intercept, the point where x is zero

the curve doesn't start at 0 but at a negative number, what i was trying to say that you don't need to start at 0

and concerning the equation y=mx + c
i was only trying to say that the equation decided is it if a curve or a straight line

TO EVERYONE:

you'll are miss interpreting the main question. Crimson was speaking about the Origin. the origin is always the point at which the x-axis intersect the y-axis. the actual graph, i.e the drawing does not begin at the origin at all times. u can have five apples on the x-axis and 10 oranges on the y-axis. their point will be (5,10). it doesn't begin at(o,o) but however the axes itself is always joint at (0,0) .it is a fixed point!

I have one qestion.This is that if one wants to start with certain vaules on the y-axis but these values cannot be represented because they are too numerous and cannot be plotted on a graph because of the weight of values. Also the graph paper is too small to take such values. Hence if these were the cases how could one plot these values within a resonable scale and with a average size of graph paper.

I think that the origin of a graph does not always need to be started at the origin(0,0). However u can start as mentioned with both axis at 5, providing that none of your values fall below 5.

A graph where the origin does not start at 0 means that there is a cut in ths axis.

Jason u have mentioned a key word in your last question asked,"scale" it is actually the solution to the problem u have asked.

If values are too large a scale can be used to represent the values being plotted.

the example i'm giving is for a point on one graph. i didn't speak about more than one lines, infact i didn't even speak aobut a line. i spoke about a point. i was showing that a point don't have to begin at the origin which is (0,0).

Yes you can get an equation for that line that is created! you just have to know where the line stops so that u'll have both beginning and end points of the line and then you can work with that to find the eqution of the straight line using its fix formula which is y=mx+c

u dont have to start ta o,but its better in terms of accuracy. because i was your boss at work and i tould u to draw a graph on some work and u started your axis with (5,50) and i tould u to tell me what happens at (3,20), now you cannot do that.

a graph does not necessarily have to start at zero. however there would be a problem in detecting where the graph cuts the y axis

i totally agree with cokechild, because u realy cannot cut the y-axis, i mean u could but it wount be accurate which is a down fall for an engineer. But, would it hurt to start at (o,0), the origin?

Yes it is possible to cut the y axis in a graph and therefore it is not a downfall for an engineering.
In fact a cut in the y axis shows a relationship the varibles on a graph.
Therefore it is not inaccurate/uncommon when a line cuts the y axis.

yes I think it has to do with the alphabetical order so to remember the (x,y) coordinates. i think that is the only reason because if you are given the y or x value in any order you will end up at the same point. what do u students think?

ok sorry, cokebaby. i mean that the (x,Y) has to do with the alphabetical order, so to remember it better. look for a dictionary if u need more meaning than that.
